Top 5 Things I HATE About The Subaru Outback

This is a video showing my main criticisms with this car.
A 2015-2019 Subaru Outback.
This does not mean that I don't love the car, obviously I do.
But over the years a couple complaints have popped up that are worth mentioning to others interested in this vehicle. I have owned a Gen 5 since August of 2014 so have a lot of time behind the wheel of one.
Next I plan to do a "top 5 things I love" video and then cite it on my resume to Buzzfeed.

Really?? No mention of the annoying CVT transmission? It feels like a rebounding rubber band when you try to accelerate hard- it's awful.

I've had both. I got offered 0% to trade from the 2.5 2015 to the 2017 and I wanted Eyesight. I figured why not go all out and get the 3.6 at that point. Happy I made it even if it isn't the smartest thing I've done. About the only thing I would consider going without is the sunroof. I like it but it's so rarely used it's hard to justify. The 2.5 should be as capable or more so since it has a lower crawl ratio. This video doesn't distinguish between the two actually. I definitely prefer the 3.6 on road. But off road the extra power it has ready is crippled by it's taller gearing. 2000 rpm at 80 mph will do that I guess.

    1. it's called "TURN OFF THE TRACTION CONTROL" also the Outback isn't made for serious off-roading
    2. yeah cause those are safety features. Idiot
    3. It isn't marketed as an off-road vehicle. It's marketed as an SUV alternative that can do some light off-roading.
    4. Not a problem
    5. Maybe get the 2.5? That gets better mileage, though it sucks in acceleration.

99% of your problems can be salved by going into the settings and turning it off. SRF is a button on the dash, Gas mileage is 25-33 which is awesome for an AWD. no car is efficient on stop and goes traffic. The door beeping can get super annoying when ur cleaning tho. But it can do a lot of other cars in its class cant. It just might struggle compared to a jeep.

Well Bruceey in your country they never imported the diesel manual or cvt variants like they did in UK. Both versions return mid to late 40's mph. But now Subaru in their wisdom have returned to gasoline/petrol engines only with cvt's. Not a good move in my opinion but... hey ho... No car is perfect but subaru are pretty close to it considering they are a road car initially. Keep making the blog's and enjoy your car.

    • bruceyyyyy

That diesel looks fun. I just saw a conversion that was done locally for sell. Hopefully Subaru hybrid tech matures. The car does fine on the highway but stop and go cut traffic just kills the mpg.

I purchased a new Outback in 2017. It had RAB and many other electrical problems from the start. I had it in the shop 10 times for repair. Went a total of 42 days without my car. It was a Lemon. Had to have it towed into the dealer no less than four times. Even the district service manager told me to contact Subaru Customer service to get a full refund, as they could not figure out what is wrong with the car. After months of being given the run around, Subaru customer service did not refund my money as they should have. I traded my car in, still under warranty, still not fixed. I lost over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars. Toyota is looking better all the time.

What tires @ 0:06? Looks like BF Goodrich All-Terrain, but what size specifically?

Agree with you... the car should only beep at you as soon as you turn it on if it needs to be immediately rev'd and driven. Most cars need 2 to 10 seconds for oil to get to the top of the engine and should not beep before that. In the older versions you could remove the beeper under the steering column in the transmission circuit board (at least for the manual outbacks). But idk where the beeper is in the new outbacks. I think it is integrated into the car head unit, dashboard, and speakers.

Curious about the spare tyre issue. In Australia, we get a full-size spare tyre and wheel of 225/60/18 for the 2019 model Outback (edit: and all previous year models now that I think about it). Your 225/65/17 is near identical in size. What do you get then - a space-saver?

    • bruceyyyyy

      bruceyyyyy

      7 hónapja

@Jeff Sereno it's specifically the design of the spare tire well. There is a taper built into the AUS Outback while the rest of the world gets a straight channel there.

    • Jeff Sereno

      Jeff Sereno

      7 hónapja

@bruceyyyyy If there's one thing Aussies don't like, it's space-savers. Many local reviews mark down cars if they don't come with a full-size spare. That said, looking at the Japanese spec of the Outback suggests that they also get a space-saver, so maybe it is a local Australian change for us then! Curious given that all Australian-shipped cars are also built in Japan and for the most part mirror around 95% of the Japanese spec (we generally miss out on heating-related features, eg: rear heated seats, heated wipers, etc).

    • bruceyyyyy

      bruceyyyyy

@bruceyyyyy thats fair. My last fill up today of 350 miles was 27mpg. Via GPS tracking for mileage. Mixed driving. I do not envy your drive😅

    • bruceyyyyy

      bruceyyyyy

      7 hónapja

@Calvin Ross Assuming the aspect ratio stays the same changing the width absolutely changes the height. A 215/65/17 tire has 1.5" less diameter than a 245/65/17 tire.

    • Calvin Ross

      Calvin Ross

      7 hónapja

@bruceyyyyy well they're equivalent in height so rotational differnece isn't part of a loss or gain in mpg. The only real factor in mpg loss would be from a wider track with the 225s. I check my mpgs using a gps log too not just what's on the cars clock too. And under those conditions that's fair I'm sure mine would be much worse but I would never live in a place with those conditions personally. My Columbus driving stresses me out enough. You'd have to drive a Prius probably to be happy with mpgs in those conditions lol. I'm coming from an '06 5 speed manual 2.5 limited outback and even that I only squeaked out an average of 29. Best was 33. So the 3.6r is almost a negligible loss but almost 100hp more😅 before that I had a Grand Cherokee that had still less power than the 3.6r but half the gas mileage. From my experience I'm beyond happy with how the 11' Outback performs overall. The BFGs are just what I had access to readily. I'm trying to sell the Toyos currently. I'd love to find a set of the BFG rugged terrains to run. They were great off road and quiet on my Jeep.

    • bruceyyyyy

      bruceyyyyy

      7 hónapja

@Calvin Ross I would say that explains the discrepancy then. The smaller tires results in a higher than actual mpg number. That plus highway driving is what this car excels at. Do some short (

This video came up because I was looking up how to turn off all the beeping on my outback. Lane departure is easy to turn off, and the backup collision warning is useful. However, you will get beeps and warnings when driving in a thunderstorm (I already know it's raining when my wipers are on), when merging in heavy traffic, and just random unknown beeps when driving on the highway. The car is safe, but for a nervous new driver all the beeping could actually cause an accident.

How do i get rid of the high pitched low volume noise from the glove box area ?
Anyone ? My friends 2016 makes a high pitched, high frequency tone that seems to change pitch w/engine rpm.
Wtf is that ? Starts as soon as its running and doesnt stop till car is shut off. Its not the engine. Almost like if we hooked up an old cb radio w/no filter and it gets like an altinator sound in cb speaker.
But there is no cb and its not coming from car speakers.
She bought it used w\20,000 miles. I am her back yard mechanic.. I have noticed a white paint mark on the altinator pully ? Maybe alt was replaced but cant figure out this low volume high picthed chime from glove box area. Any input would be great
Over allb pretty nice ride shes got. Just wish we could locate this sound and eliminate it
I have not had to do anything to this car cept brakes and oil so far 60,000

@bruceyyyyy it is absolutley electronic. Next time i get my hands on the car im pulling outglove box and looking for after market alarms and or something in there making that chime noise. Ive had plenty of jeeps. Always lived in the sticks till i was 35. I own an 80 cj7 w/an amc/ford 304 v8, ford t18 tranny w/a dana 20 case. And lots of other out of date goodies, lol. Daily drive an 04 tj sport. The wife has a 14 jku. I wouldnt buy another new one, i swear the tj's gonna outlast it. Ive had direct access to my dads jeeps when i was young. Cj3a. Cj5. Cj7 And a suzuki samuri. The sammy, way more fun off road than ppl may relize. I have had. An 80 toyota sr4, man that was a great truck, till the frame rotted behind cab, back in the 90's it was a huge no no to weld a frame, now they sell kits to box the bad. Figures. Had to sell for the engine. But i was just a kid. Todayb i wpuld have cut and welded new pcs in. Had a 93 wrangler. Brand new. 2.5 l 4 cylinder. 1st and only 4 cylinder jeep i ever owned, what a pos that was. Ive even had an amc spirit sx4, probably worth money today. An eagle premier station wagon, lol. What a beast that was. Jeep liberty, um.... Lets not talk about that 1. I'll just say it was as if all 4 tires fell off at the same time. Had a 96 grand cherokee go 16 years and 240000. My wife didnt like me driving the kids around in it. She thought it was gonna lose the frony axle in the city. Lets face it, there were no rubber bushings left in the front end. But my favorite to drive, especially on a snow covered rd. Bright red 88 cherokee. 4 door. Lots of ppl dont relize they made those early cherokkes in 2 door as well. I had 1 little car when i was 1st out od highschool, a toy mr2. Had it 1 year. Seemed like i needed new tires every month. It had no business being on the roads in the town i grew up in. See a tree branch at the side of the road... Flat tire, lol, or it sure seemed that way. Not only that but the few times i brought it to the beach and used it as a dune buggy.. Yeahb i didnt deserve to own it. But i have never had a subaru. I think i need 1. Probably the most suitable vehicle for what my wife and i do.

@Keith cerce Something that high frequency screams electronic to me. Like a capacitor going bad. But what it is in I have no idea.

@Keith cerce Good news! No Gen 5 2015-2019) needs regular timing belt maintenance. The EZ36 (3.6) and FB25 (3.5) both have a timing chain that is good the life of the vehicle. I like older Jeeps. I think they're great. I just feel daily driving one is a bit like driving a skid steer to work. Awesome, yes... But a bit much. How old Jeep we talking? CJ 5, CJ7, YJ or TJ?

Thank you for the quick reply, much appreciated. I'll sub, besides, id like to know more about the car. Im sure I'll be getting to that timing belt in another 30k. Looks straight foward, easy to get at. Btw, she changed the brakes being very proactive. The clips were barely contacting the rotors. Her last couple cars just fell apart from lack of maint. Plus they were $hitty cars to begin w. As ive been told, this is why she got a subaru this time around. And i have to agree its. Better than others shes had. In fact, kinda like the car And ive always driven old jeeps. Im sure comments will be heading my way cause im about to say its probably better on a snowy STREET than my jeep is. Its longer, wider, and its center of gravity is much lower. Allowing it to brake/stop easier and certainly corner safer. Geez, i think i should go look at used subarus

@bruceyyyyy i would, if i knew how, lol, but i dont even think you'd be able to hear it on video,. You can drown out the high pitched sound w/stock srereo volume at 01. But, doesnt stop me from wondering what it is, or asking her how her dogs enjoy that sound the whole time you drive. Must drive them crazy.

Gas millage is great city and highway compared to my V6 05 Sportage that i got rid of for this car. Its not a Prius, How good do you expect an SUV/Cross to be on gas?

If you wanted to go offroad, you really should have bought a Lamborghini LM002 instead of a panzy Subaru. Get a real job.

The flat motor doesn't give good gas mileage, that's all there is too it. It gives great torque and power per its weight, has great balance, is reliable and great to drive. But it will always eat gas. Unfortunately Subaru will be forced to abandon it and switch to inline fours with turbos or electrics, because people and our infrastructure use too much damn gas.

My 3.6 gets 21 around town and 26+ on the hwy. I carry about 400 lbs. constantly and run a 235/65-17r tire that’s heavy as hell and they are great! Try a true dual exhaust, K&N filter and a chip. You’ll love the results.
